Plate, 10.5 inches diameter. Printed maker's mark for Barkers & Kent. It should be noted that Wallis Gimson & Co. registered this pattern (Rd. No. 8844). That plate has a registration date of 1884. Evidently Barkers and Kent acquired the pattern from Wallis Gimson & Co., perhaps when they went out of business. This border- only pattern features a wide band with three different motifs. One is a stylized flowerhead, the second is a horizontal branch of flowers and berries, and the third is a large spray of cabbage roses that extend partly into the center of the plate.

Barkers & Kent was an earthenware manufacturer at the Foley Pottery in Fenton, Staffordshire, England. The business opened in 1889 and was incorporated as a Limited Company in 1898. Barkers & Kent ceased production in 1941 and was concentrated with W. H. Grindley & Co. at their Woodlands Pottery. Barkers & Kent did not re-open at the end of World War II. The business was wound up by voluntary liquidation in September 1947.
