Mug, 4 inches tall. The printed mark of James Gildea includes a painted pattern number "B 7319" and Rd. No. dating the registration to 1886. The mug is transfer printed in brown with enamel colors added in the cartouches. There are two cartouches surrounded by leaves underneath and a trellis at the sides. The first cartouche shows Crusoe, dressed in rags, pulling his boat to shore as he arrives at the island. The second cartouche sees him standing with a rifle, warmly dressed, as he sees a large sailboat coming to his rescue, having seen the discharge of smoke from the rifle. The additional image is decorated with leaves, grapes and berries and part of the trellis. The border pattern is the same on the top outside of the mug as on the inside shown here.

In 1878 James Gildea joined the partnership of Bates and Walker. In 1881 Bates left the partnership and Gildea & Walker continued together. In 1885 Gildea continued the business alone. Around 1887 the business was carried on as Keeling & Co.
