Remember when hay bales were all rectangles? I loved them. I loved their geometry. They could be stacked like stair steps in the hayloft to achieve just the right height for a big long swing to the other side. Then they all slowly became giant rolls. Weirdly shiny rolls. Up close you can see the shine comes from netting holding them together. Then, some of them, to my horror started presenting themselves as giant white plastic rolls. Monet was well known for paintings of hay stacks, another shape all together. So it’s quite fun for me as a modern day version of an Impressionist to paint the modern day hay forms. As with most things once I start painting it I fall in love. The organic shape! That glorious shine from the protective netting! And of course the way they nestle back towards the shelter of the barn.
