Maggie created this work while on sabbatical in Colorado. This piece is part of a series of four works that capture the four seasons. The use of the silver and blues embody the tones of winter ice as it forms and melts over the natural rockof the mountain landscape. The piece went through a creation, destruction and rebirth process during its creation being cut apart and reassembled onto a second canvas. This part of the process helps us appreciate the role that winter has in the annual cycles of the environment. What was created in the previous season comes to the point of perceived death in order to create the pathway for new life. She was inspired to use her ECOS series of work to explore the seasons because of its environmentally conscious foundation and use of organic materials.
About the ECOS Series
ECOS is an ongoing body of work that leverages recycled materials to create pieces that function as wall sculptures full of texture and movement. Using Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s paper sacks that she deconstructs and paints, she leverages tools from origami to fold the torn pieces into thousands of pedal like shapes that are then pieced together and affixed to the canvas. In these works it is often an exploration in the use of negative space to create movement, connection, and tension.
