Maggie created this work while on sabbatical in Colorado. This piece is part of a series of four works that capture the four seasons. Inspiration for this pairing came from the Rocky Mountain summer sunsets. The rich oranges seek to capture the power and warmth of the upper elevation sun and sky. The touches of copper paint and soft pinks pull in the shimmers of light that come as the sun crests the tops of the mountains. Light blues and whites mimic the cirrus clouds to bring airy whimsical movement to the pair. Maggie spent many hours strolling the Yampa River and hot springs, whose deep-blue flow is also found in this piece. She was inspired to use her ECOS series of work during this exploration of the seasons because of the use of environmentally conscious, organic materials.
About the ECOS Series
ECOS is an ongoing body of work that leverages recycled materials to create pieces that function as wall sculptures full of texture and movement. Using Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s paper sacks that she deconstructs and paints, she leverages tools from origami to fold the torn pieces into thousands of pedal like shapes that are then pieced together and affixed to the canvas. In these works it is often an exploration in the use of negative space to create movement, connection, and tension.
