'Forgotten Idols III' by Katarina Dordevic, Acrylic on Canvas Painting
This 33.46" x 47.24" acrylic on canvas painting by Katarina Dordevic features abstracted depictions of prehistoric archaeological findings. Relying on the original museums’ ensemble, the remnants of the prehistoric archaeological findings and contemporary architectural structure of this work inquiries into the asymmetrical balance of inner and outer psychological space and compositional elements, as well. The meaning of the displayed objects is not based on the meticulous care for the actual details. The perception of the object is directed to the form created by human and further to comprehending of that object as an energetic account of the individual who cannot be seen, but his presence in the creation can be felt. Prior to being shaped from segment to a figure of an idol, it is an "essentially flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order".
Museum displays inspired this artwork. Well-thought-out installation of figurines, objects from the past and the light that exposes the best sides of the museum artifacts are transformed into the painting on which the colors, texture and geometrically divided surface create intimate interior. The nature of painting and its materials are highlighted by using the different art tools – brushes, knives, sponges and by the procedures of application the colors – drippings, washouts, gesture and impasto paint. Beside the tactile texture of a surface, the solemn atmosphere of a museum’s space is depict by the play of interlaced cold and warm fields, analogous to collage.
'Forgotten Idols III' has been exhibited across Serbia, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
